MARADONA HAILS TOTTI AS HE RETIRES

Argentina soccer legend Diego Maradonahas hailed Roma legend Francesco Totti as the Italian is set to retire this summer.

Maradona, who is arguably the best player of all time, took out time to hail Totti for his dedication to AS Roma for 25 years.

Maradona claimed Totti is the “king of Rome,” adding that he is the best player he ever saw.

Totti is set to exit the side after 25 years of service to the club based in the Italian capital. He is arguably the best player in the club’s history. After 785 appearances and 307 goals, he is set to call time on his lifetime career at the club.

He is set to take up a six-year deal as a director at the Olympic stadium. Roma has not offered him the 40-year old a new deal as they seem to be encouraging him to take the break from active football.

Totti would forever remain the fans favourite after all the exploits of the attacker. He helped the club to the Serie A title in 2001 and then the Coppa Italia in 2007 and 2008. He played a part as Italy lifted the World Cup in 2006.

Roma’s sporting director Monchi said: “There is an agreement with the club that this will be his last year. Then he will continue as a director. I want him on my side because he is Roma and can teach me what Roma is.”

He was expected to quit last year but he was offered one more year. There are rumours that he could get one last year this summer but Monchi’s statement might mean the end of that. He played mostly from the bench this term but he was crucial to Roma’s amazing run in the league.
